• What is Fresh Meat?

Fresh Meat is an annual, four-stage programme that takes ordinary, everyday women and turns them into derby girls, skating for PRD. Completing the first two stages of Fresh Meat training is also a requirement for both men and women who want to rule the track as members of Team Zebra.

• How do I register?

Registration for 2016 Fresh Meat is at the Morley Rollerdrome! Contact freshmeat@perthrollerderby.com.au for your info and registration pack.

• How much does it cost?

Aside from gear, there’s a mandatory fee for skate insurance. Fresh Meat sessions cost $10 a week until level three, at which point prospective skaters and zebras become full dues-paying members of PRD. The money from Fresh Meat sessions goes towards the cost of venue hire; all of our coaches are volunteers and do it for the love of the sport.

• What do I need to play?

To participate in PRD’s Fresh Meat programme, you will need to be over 18 and have:

  • A basic level of skating ability.
  • Derby-grade quad-skates.
  • Basic safety equipment, including:
  • Helmet
  • Mouth guard
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Kneepads

• How ‘basic’ is basic skating ability? If I’ve never skated before, or haven’t skated in years, can I still be Fresh Meat?

Yes! Some of our best skaters were new to skates before joining PRD. However, to participate in Fresh Meat, you must be able to:

  • Balance on skates
  • Propel yourself forward
  • Stop without assistance

We will teach you the rest. If you’re not certain of your abilities, we recommend taking a few lessons before coming to Fresh Meat. Morley Rollerdrome offers basic skating classes cheaply on Saturday and Sunday mornings with some excellent instructors.

• How fit do I need to be?

A moderate level of fitness is necessary to begin to play roller derby. In order to pass level two testing, you will need to be able to do sit-ups, pushups and plank for a minute. The fitter you are going in, the easier it will be going forward!

• Where do you train?

All Fresh Meat Training is held at Morley Rollerdrome.

• How often do you train?

Fresh Meat begin by training twice a week. Once they have passed level two, there is the opportunity to train with currently bouting skaters. Prospective Zebras depart Fresh Meat at the end of level two and go into our Zebra training programme.

• What will I learn?

PRD trains all of its skaters to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) standards. With commitment from you and guidance from your coaches, by the end of Fresh Meat, you will be a proficient skater who will be able to skate confidently forwards and backwards, stop in multiple ways, jump and more. You will also be able to fall safely, hit and take hit safely, and get an understanding of basic derby strategies.

Zebras learn basic skating skills and how to fall safely. After leaving level two, they will be taken under the wing of our senior referees to learn the rules of Derby and how to implement them.

• Where can I get my gear?

There are several skate shops online and around Perth, including at the Morley Rollerdrome. Many PRD members frequent Lucky Skates in Inglewood, WA’s roller derby specialty store. Lucky Skates is skater owned and run and offers advice and special Fresh Meat packs for starting skaters.

• I’m too young to play with PRD – are there any junior leagues?

Yes! Perth Junior Roller Derby opened its doors in 2013. Check out their facebook page for more information.

• I’m a FIFO worker – can I still play derby?

If you work FIFO, or are going to be away for extended periods and want to play with PRD, it’s best to discuss your particular situation with the Fresh Meat Coordinator first. If you reside or regularly work outside of Perth, there are several leagues in regional Western Australia.

• Is there anything else I should know?

PRD Fresh Meat are expected to help out with league activities, including helping to set up, run and tear down bouts. PRD is a very hands-on league; all of our members contribute in some way.

Playing Roller Derby can be fun, rewarding and empowering. It also takes commitment and hard work. It’s important to consider if you are able to make that commitment before you sign up. Our training and league expectations are outlined above, so if you are still reading that’s a great start! We understand that everyone has things going on outside of derby, but we place a strong emphasis on attendance at PRD, so it is worthwhile having a think about this stuff before you get started to avoid disappointment later.
